BACKGROUND
In February 2020, two key Netflix executives, Ted Sarandos and Dorothy Ghettuba travelled to Lagos, Nigeria with the content team to meet the Nollywood creative community. This signalled Netflix’s intent to expand into Nigeria and emphasize the importance of Nollywood to Netflix, as its next priority market on the continent. Netflix hosted three film industry stakeholder events to position Dorothy Ghettuba and Ben Amadusun as the main faces of Netflix in Africa.
EXECUTION
Together with our in-country communications partner in Nigeria, we quickly created a media statement announcing Netflix’s investment in Nigeria’s creative community with the production of its first Nigerian original scripted series, “Akin Omotoso Project”, which is a six-part series directed by Akin alongside Daniel Oriahi and CJ Obasi. We captured some eye-catching images of the global Netflix team engaging with the local creative community.
Both the media statement and the photo/caption was seeded to mainstream media, online entertainment sites and bloggers.
